High levels of violence and poor governance threaten South Africa's prospects. Public anxiety has been heightened by recent high-profile incidents such as the rape and murder of UCT student Uyinene Mrwetyana, mob attacks on foreign nationals, and the deployment of the military to support police on the Cape Flats.
This seminar will reflect on the recent incidents of violence, including against women and foreign nationals, in the context of the latest crime statistics released by police on 12 September. Speakers will review the trends and discuss strategies to prevent violence.
This seminar is jointly hosted by the Safety and Violence Initiative (UCT) and the Institute for Security Studies.
